Walkability is still a somewhat novel concept especially on car-dominated Long Island. This webinar uses the case study of a walkability and pedestrian safety improvement study on Long Island. It demonstrates a series of innovative community engagement and planning tools that were used to generate and sustain much needed community support. Specific emphasis is placed on the visualization of design suggestions to effectively communicate technical concepts to the general public.

As GPI’s Director of Sustainability, Frank Wefering is developing a new service line centered on sustainability planning and transportation. He is bringing a new perspective to project management and planning which is based on his international experience in sustainable transportation and urban mobility. Mr. Wefering initiated GPI’s Complete Streets and Active Transportation Initiative and is spearheading the activities of a cross-office group of staff with complementary expertise in engineering, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, transportation modeling, active transportation planning, and other disciplines.
Ankita Rathi is a senior planner with wide experience in transportation planning projects ranging from county-wide mobility planning projects to neighborhood / corridor specific studies, including walkability improvement studies, suburban mobility studies, freight mobility projects, environmental impact assessments, GIS based land suitability analysis, regional environmental management plans, and policy analysis. Additional work with corporate infrastructure development firms includes concept definition, sector growth assessment, market studies, and business planning. Other experience includes community development grant writing and management, community engagement, and outreach.
Christopher Fiene is a CADD Manager who possesses a Five Star Certified MicroStation Rating. He is a specialist in various software customization and programming, as well as AutoCAD, Inroads and Civil 3D skills. He has an extensive training background as he has been training in-house and public agency engineers and CAD staff on this software for over 20 years. As technology has progressed, Mr. Fiene has kept relevant with the latest software developments. Among those are CIM related, including Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite. Elements of the design suite such as Navisworks, 3D Studio Max, Civil 3D and Design Review compromise the core of CIM. Mr. Fiene has gained expert knowledge in each of these components. He has also gained valuable experience in the use of Autodesk Stingray Gaming Engine Software and Lumion Rendering Engine Software.
Frank Pearson came to GPI after a 32-year career with NYSDOT serving in several positions but most notably as Region 10 Traffic Engineer for 11 years and as acting Regional Director for nine months. Mr. Pearson’s wealth of experience includes detailed vehicular and pedestrian safety studies, investigating and mitigating high-accident locations, identifying safety, operational and infrastructure needs and proposing improvement alternatives to address the documented needs. He personally led several safety initiatives to address transportation safety issues including: I-495 RSA (Road Safety Audit); NYSDOT’s Safe Senior Program on Long Island; Main Street Traffic Calming Plan in Smithtown; Hempstead Turnpike Pedestrian Safety Corridor Study. These assignments required direct interaction with federal, state and local elected officials and their staff; governmental agencies; advocacy groups, police agencies and community members to successfully develop and implement transportation improvements. He is currently GPI’s project manager for NYSDOT’s Downstate Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (PSAP) term agreement. The primary purpose of this contract is to develop recommendations and design construction plans for improvements to enhance pedestrian safety at 700 uncontrolled crosswalks and 1,000 signalized intersections.
