12:00 PM-2:00 PM | East Side Access Tour
Meeting Location to be Provided to all Registrants
NOTE: Registration for this session is now SOLD OUT
East Side Access provides new Long Island Rail Road service to the east side of Manhattan, supplementing existing service to Penn Station on Manhattan’s west side and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn. The East Side Access megaproject is one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States with a history that reaches back to the 1950’s when discussions were first held regarding regional transportation planning. The project encompasses work in multiple locations in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx and includes more than 8 miles of tunneling.
Before the tour, participants will learn about the history of the project, tunneling and excavation, the concourse and terminal construction and the reconfiguration and modernization of Harold Interlocking. This brief presentation will provide context before the tour. Then participants will visit the Manhattan Caverns worksite beneath Grand Central Terminal.
Joe Christen, VP, Deputy Program Executive for MTA Capital Construction will guide participants through the worksite, speaking more about the project scope, the magnitude and complexity of the project, project challenges, milestones and the work that is currently in progress.
As an active construction site, all visitors must wear appropriate attire including footwear and full Personal Protective Equipment. Attendees are asked to bring their own boots, and any other Personal Protective Equipment will be provided.
