Vision Zero: Support for a Mayoral Initiative to make NYC’s Streets Safer
The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York supports Mayor de Blasio on his Vision Zero initiative. Our member firms work directly in this field and understand the importance of an effective plan that addresses the challenging dynamics New York City needs. New York has a transportation system that incorporates the largest multi-modal transit system in the world, has three major passenger airports, and serves residents of four states on a regular commuting basis. The city needs to have bold initiatives promote safer travel while ensuring the reliability of commerce to sustain these systems.
ACEC New York understands that this is not a “one-size-fits-all” mandate. Detailed analysis, sound engineering judgment and solid design principles are required to effectively improve safety for the traveling public. With all of these factors to consider, Vision Zero requires thoughtful solutions, given that the needs of a neighborhood in Queens may differ dramatically from one in midtown Manhattan or another in Staten Island. Our association and its constituent members stand by the Mayor and look forward to engaged partnership in the planning and implementation of all stages of the process. ACEC New York member firms are of the highest professional and ethical caliber, use state of the art equipment and ideas, and have more than a century of experience planning, designing and overseeing construction directly related to this type of plan.
Many ACEC New York firms are already at the forefront of traffic safety initiatives throughout the world. These firms are hard at work addressing the goal of improved safety for the traveling public through a variety of strategies, including improved geometric design of streets and roadways, application of traffic calming elements and reduced speed zones, and implementation of advanced cutting-edge computer-driven technologies that help manage speed and congestion. Combined with sustainable smart-growth initiatives that incorporate all modes of travel, the Vision Zero plan can help achieve the safety and efficiency goals identified by the Mayor.
